An Overview

The Documentation and Study Centre on the European Union (CDE) of the University of Ferrara, affiliated with the Department of Law and part of the EU information network, is governed by an agreement signed between the University and the European Commission.

The CDE network was established starting in 1963 in the Member States and in third countries with the aim of spreading EU information in higher education and research institutions. There are now about 700 Centres, 50 of which are in Italy.

The CDE is currently located at the Law Library, on Corso Ercole I° d’Este 37, Ferrara. For hours and notices, please consult the page of the Department of Law.

The objectives of the CDE

Collaborate with the University in promoting teaching and research in the field of European integration.

Make information on the European Union and its policies accessible to the public, including non-academics.

Participate in the debate on the Union by establishing contacts with other points of the European information network.

History

The Documentation and Study Center on European Communities was established in December 1952 at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ferrara, on the initiative of professors Guido Lucatello and Giulio Bruni Roccia, in the years immediately following the creation of the ECSC.

From the beginning, the Center has been characterized as a place of study and dissemination of European topics through conferences, training courses, and editorial activities, involving distinguished Italian and international scholars.

In the 1950s and 1960s, the activity intensified with the organization of culture courses authorized by the Ministry of Public Education and with the publication of series and study booklets dedicated to European institutions.

After a period of slowdown, in the late 1970s the Center experienced a new boost thanks to the strengthening of university courses on European Community law and the consolidation of its institutional structure.
